Loan star Thomson still number one for Warriors
In-form goalkeeper Robbie Thomson will keep his place between the sticks for at least one more match after another impressive performance against Queen of the South.
The 19-year-old has been an outstanding performer for Stenhousemuir since being signed on-loan from Celtic following an injury to first-choice keeper Callum Reidford.
Reidford is now back in full training and played 90 minutes of a reserve match on Tuesday night, but Warriors assistant boss Kevin McGoldrick says that Thomson will be keeping his place.
He told Heraldsport: “Callum is a fantastic goalie and he knows how much that myself and Martyn rate him. We’ve spoken with him and explained that we won’t be rushing him back straight into the first-team in case there’s a return of his injury.
“It wouldn’t be fair to Robbie to drop him after his performance against Queen of the South. He kept us in the game in the first half.
“When Callum was injured, we won a watch in Robbie, he’s done a fantastic job since arriving from Celtic.”
Stenhousemuir fought back to secure a draw after finding themselves 2-0 at half time against league leaders Queen of the South at the weekend. The home side were reduced to 10 men when Derek Young was sent-off on the stroke of half time, and a reinvigorated Stenny came close to winning the match in the second half.
“We were well on top as the match wore on, and I think if it had lasted five minutes longer we would have found that winning goal,” said McGoldrick.
This Saturday Stenhousemuir travel to Glebe Park where they will face Brechin City, a side they have already beaten twice this year. But City look a different side since the recent appointment of Ray McKinnon as manager, as they cruised to a 3-0 win last week against Stranraer.
Scott Buist remains injured and club captain Ross McMillan is still suspended, and Stenhousemuir’s defensive dilemma was further compounded this week after Lee Kilday picked up a back injury.
That means local lad Jamie O’Grady could be considered for his first league start for the Warriors.
One player who is almost certain to start against Brechin is Eric Paton, who featured as a substitute last weekend and is now considered to be at last back to full fitness.
