Falkirk are first and Stags second but avoid a derby at Strathendrick Sevens
Falkirk RFC lifted the McGinlay Shield at the Strathendrick rugby Sevens tournament for the first time in a generation.
It is 21 years since the Sunnysiders lifted the trophy and in the cup competition, Grangemouth Stags were runners-up.
However, the pair avoided a local derby after progressing into different sections of the draw after the group stage.
The Stags fielded a young squad including four of the current under-18s, with only Gary Dempsey over-21.
The Sunnysiders used a squad of eight players, made up from both First and Second fifteen players and set a precedent in a sport usually dominated by fast, agile backs, with the Sunnysiders’ squad consisting of seven forwards and one back.
Top scorer for Falkirk was Bruce Simpson with five tries to his name and Peni Navu with a single touchdown.
They helped them reach the final of the Shield competition against the President’s Seven after defeats to Hillfoots in the first round and Alloa in the second.
Falkirk defeated McLaren High before the final.
Grangemouth also played McLaren and won 14–5 thanks to Aubrey Mncube’s two tries.
In the second game in their group Grangemouth improved to defeat Stirling County 21–0. The Stags topped the group and moved into the cup phase of group winners where they were beaten by hosts Strathendrick 19–7.
In their final game Grangemouth had an epic struggle against Hillfoots which was locked at 14 all before the Stags collected a loose lineout for the winning score.
The youthful Stags therefore finished in overall second spot.
