Three local footballers, found themselves representing Scotland - despite retiring from the semi-professional ranks almost 15 years ago.

James Sneddon, Davie Sneddon (no relation) and Colin Wallace were part of the 24 man squad which travelled to Thailand to represent Scotland in the FISA Seniors World Cup.

The trio played locally at junior level, James with Bonnybridge and Camelon, Colin, with Bonnybridge and Dunipace and Davie with Camelon and Sauchie.

They were joined in the squad by ex-Bairn Stevie Tosh.

James played in last years competition and had the honour of scoring Scotland’s first ever goal in the tournament.

The competition, for over 38 year olds, has a complicated system where players are placed in three categories relating to age.

All three Falkirk ‘Bairns’ came under the oldest category and began their five games in six days with two draws against New Zealand and Australia. Defeat to the holders and overall winners Iran, saw them miss out on the semi finals and enter the Master’s Plate competition.

A 3-2 win over the UAE saw them face the ‘auld enemy’ in the Final at the 35,000 seater Supachalasai National Stadium.

In an end to end battle Scotland who had led twice fell behind but a last minute goal from Steve Tosh took the match to penalties where Davie Sneddon was successful with his effort in the 2-3 shoot out defeat.

James said: “The cost to transport, accommodate and feed a 30 strong entourage on the other side of the world is considerable. The entry fee for example is £3,200 alone. Currently all players contribute £1,000 of their own money or sponsorship with fundraising bringing in the shortfall.

“As a member of the Seniors committee would welcome any financial help , be it kit sponsorship, website sponsorship, facebook sponsorship etc to allow the squad to concentrate on preparation for next years tournament and achieve their goal of winning the tournament.

“Thanks to Gordon Swift of G.J.S Landscapes and Paul Lewis, of Bannatyne’s Health Club who helped out with financial assistance and auction items this year.”
