LOCAL football was saddened by the passing of Archie Campbell, aged 80, last week.
Archie was president, secretary, treasurer and did pretty much everything else except play for Grangemouth Rovers until the late 70s when the junior club folded.
That Archie’s enthusiasm and hard graft failed to generate support to sustain the club was more a reflection on the area than him, and he sincerely wished Falkirk Juniors F.C. the very best when they entered the East of Scotland League this season.
A revenue-raising bar was to be Rovers’ salvation, but a licence was not forthcoming. Yet everyone associated with the club was affected by his enthusiasm.
Born in Falkirk’s Glasgow Buildings in a family of eleven Archie moved to Redding after marrying Margaret Shaw where the couple remained until recent years when they decamped to Camelon.
He was also a popular figure at Falkirk greyhound track in McFarlane Crescent as a breeder and racer of the hounds.
After an apprenticeship as a moulder and National Service he spent most of his working life with BP Chemicals as a storeman before taking early retirement and toiling as a handyman at the Friendly Hotel.
The affection in which Archie was held was demonstrated by the attendance at his cremation service last Friday with football folk from across the decades present.
Falkirk Juniors were represented by Alan Kier and all his former players expressed their times with him was the happiest of their careers.
Archie leaves wife Margaret, sons John and Arthur – the former an ex-Rovers’ player – and daughter Myra, daughters-in-lawLinda and Lesley, son-in-law Asif and several grandchildren.
