FALKIRK. St Mungo's High school. Girls won the Scottish Shield on Friday night.

ST Mungo’s High School are Scottish Senior Shield champions.

The girls’ team defeated Falkirk High by a goal to nil at The Falkirk Stadium on Friday night.

Shelby Cairney scored the winner with barely 15 minutes left of an even cup tie to play.

The goal proved enough to edge the national title in a Merchiston Avenue direction and ensured there would be no need for penalty kicks to separate the two sides who are only three quarters of a mile apart as the crow flies.

And they put on a showcase to prove how girls’ football in Falkirk is amongst the best in the country.

Winning coach Nicola Bell told Heraldsport: “It was a great final and a great achievement for the teams to get there.

“St Mungo’s girls have done incredibly well and showed great determination throughout the tournament.

“They have to be congratulated on what is a wonderful achievement for themselves and their school.

“They were a credit to themselves and everyone associated with the school.”
