Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games were a roaring success - for Falkirk athletes as well as the city.

The district had several athletes not only competing, but in finals across the disciplines and sports at the extravaganza.

And bowling director Ron McArthur and shooter Jen McIntosh were among the medals for the locals.

In total the area sent nine; Ron McArthur (bowls), Jen McIntosh (shooting), Jayne Clason (wrestling), Seonaid McIntosh (shooting), Ross Muir (swimming), Kieran McGuckin (swimming), Jade Nimmo (long jump), Myra Perkins (hammer) and Grant Plenderleith (relay).

There were locals in the opening ceremony and acting as Clydesiders and event volunteers.

As well as them, a handful of athletes with conenctions to the area who work or train here were in competition - like Duncan Scott (swimming), Donald McIntosh (shooting coach) and Susan McKelvie (hammer).

Of course, The Falkirk Herald was following their progress keenly and here are the best of chief photographer Michael Gillen’s images of the big event including the opening and closing ceremonies and the role of world record holder, Usain Bolt.
