The Benchman reckons FIFA need to reexamine their priorities, and recalls Dragutin Ristic’s infamous miss at Boghead.
TRADITIONS: Flamini and Wenger apparently fell out over the former’s decision to wear a long-sleeved shirt as the Arsenal club tradition is that the captain of the day decides the style of shirts for his side. Am I missing something here? I recall Bert Slater telling us that Alex Wright had his sleeves rolled up to his shoulder - even in the middle of winter
LONG DRAWN-OUT PROCESS: How on earth can you make a three-hour television programme out of the World Cup draw? Slow motion replays? It beggars belief that so much money is being spent on the event. Will there be visits to the several unfinished stadia? I think not.
LAST WEEK’S ANSWERS: The mystery man showing off the trophies was England cricketer Colin Cowdrey. The trophies were the FA Cup, The Ashes and the Rugby League Challenge Cup. Willie Cunningham never managed Leicester City, but he was in charge at Dunfermline and St.Mirren.
TEASER: Which Falkirk player scored in his one and only appearance for the Scottish League in 1948?
WATCH OF THE DAY: At the Football Memories dinner on Friday night, John ‘The Count’ McCormack was wearing his Falkirk cup winners’ watch from 1957. I had never seen one of these before and the pride on John’s face was obvious.
MISS OF THE DAY: Could you believe that miss by Giaccherini of Sunderland from three yards out? It provided an excuse to re-run the great howlers from the past, but they missed one out. Those who were at Boghead will never forget Dragutin Ristic’s effort from two inches out which he put over the bar.
BILL FOULKES: Sad to hear of his passing. A brave, brave man and a great defender. A real Old Trafford hero.
SHOOGLY PEGS: Talk about a dangerous job? The average football manager in the real world, not the computer game, lasts 1.4 years. Last week-end there was intense speculation surrounding the managers at Fulham, Spurs, Norwich and West Ham.It cannot be easy for the man or his family to have such public discussion of his professional future. How many goals have you seen the manager score or miss? How many penalties has a manager conceded? How many goalkeeping errors has a manager made? In the end, Martin Jol joined the dole queue- and others will surely follow.
