Pitch was the least of the nightmare

Faced with 2,500 Partick Thistle captains, a phantom penalty and being locked inside Firhill - The Benchman had a strange Saturday.

LIGHTNING STRIKES: Blair Alston really likes scoring against Thistle in front of his own fans. April 2011-goal. April 2012-goal. Same place, same end and almost the same goal-time.

LOCKED IN:Nearly missed the bus home due to “security staff” at Firhill. The press area is in the Jackie Husband stand and the yellow-jacket refused to open the gates after the match to let us out. I could see the Falkirk fans climbing up the hill to the buses and we were still under lock and key. The “officer” didn’t even have a walkie-talkie to get permission to pull the bolt back. By the time we got out, even Sam and Duncan were on the Senior Bairns bus.

LAST WEEK’S QUIZ: Did you get the Dundee marksman? It was none other than Alan Cousin who came to Brockville from Hibs. And that was quite a rare picture of a Falkirk side taken outside the dressing-rooms entrance at Pittodrie. Included in the picture were Buck McCarry, Jim Pierson, Willie Whigham, Tommy Lowry, Ian Rae and Jimmy McIntosh. George Blues, Sammy Reid, Billy Fulton and Jimmy Adam are in the front row.

FIRHILL: What a pitch! Anyone who ever doubted the wisdom of playing rugby and football on the same playing surface had their answer on Saturday. It must have been a groundsman’s worst nightmare to prepare the park for football after the combined efforts of Glasgow Warriors and their opponents.

AWARDS: Last night was the annual awards evening for Falkirk, but this is time for The Benchman Awards for season 2011/12.
