Goalkeeper Michael McGovern is staying with Falkirk after signing a new one-year contract.
Last season’s players’ player of the year inked the deal with Steven Pressley on Tuesday, knocking back offers from the SPL in the process.
And the stopper believes sticking with the Bairns will give him the best possible chance of furthering his Northern Ireland prospects.
“There was interest from the SPL, but I know the grass isn’t always greener,” he told The Falkirk Herald.
“I’ve been in the SPL and stuck on the bench and that’s not how I’ll develop - a goalkeeper needs games.
“I never really got a chance, I know that if I want to develop I need games and I will get them at Falkirk where I’m happy and playing.
“If I was going to move, it had to be the right move for me - not just into a bigger league. But Falkirk’s like home to me now, I’ve enjoyed the last year so I’m delighted to stay.”
The Northern Irishman was handed an international cap in a friendly with Chile in February after some sterling shows between the sticks.
“Of course I’d love to be involved more,” he told The Falkirk Herald, “and it was nice to be recognised this season, but I accept I’m probably not going to be a fixture in the squad playing in the First Division.
“The most important thing I can do is develop and enhance my chances and I will do that playing regularly and I’m looking forward to that with Falkirk.
“I love it at the club - it’s a fantastic set-up. I’m delighted to have it all finalised after a fantastic time last year.
“I’m looking forward to the new season already, last year we couldn’t have envisaged the season we had. We’ve all played at Hampden now, and we’re all winners after the Ramsdens Cup - now we have to keep challenging and develop further. The manager was a big draw, and I can enjoy my summer now after getting the deal done so early.”
McGovern is an important figure in Falkirk’s plans next season, and after a positive outcome with the number one, Steven Pressley refuses to give up on repeating the trick and luring Farid El Alagui back for another year.
McGovern though, would be amazed - and delighted - to have the Moroccan back as a team-mate.
“He was terrific last season, but I am sure Farid has a whole host of offers after scoring 28 goals in one season.
“I’d love it if he was to come back too. I’d be amazed but I’d love it too.”
