Falkirk-trained Russian mixed martial artist heads to the London 02

Rustam Gustev was a late call-up to the Enfusion show at the weekend, held in London’s O2.

The show is one of the biggest in the UK and shown live on pay-per-view on the fight network.

Viewers witnessed the mixed martial artist from Falkirk’s Headhunters Gym in Vicar Street win by KO in the third round.

The Russian knocked Lasher Kurun out 12 seconds after the second interval with a right-left punch combination.

Barry Thompson from the gym was delighted at Rustam’s progress against his German opponent.

“It’s a really big deal fighting on that stage - it really is the top level of sport for him.

“Rustam has been excellent and it is taking the gym to the next level – I’m also sure Darren is destined for that sort of show too very very soon with the way he is going.

“People were impressed by Rustam and that can only be good news for the future.”

The 100kg fight opened in the local fighter’s favour as Kurun tried to overwhelm him early on.

But the Russian picked his punches to edge the first round with several left hooks before taking complete control of the fight in the second round and knocking his opponent down twice, before doing the same again 12 seconds into round three.
