Dumbarton defeated as Bairns claim second victory

David Weatherston seals the win for Falkirk

First half goals from Lyle Taylor and David Weatherston were enough to hand Falkirk their second win of the season.

Conditions were bright and dry for the Bairns’ first visit to Dumbarton on league duty since 1994.

Steven Pressley handed a competitive debut to Ryan McGeever as Sean Higgins missed out due to injury.

Taylor was rated a doubt midweek but recovered in time to keep his place leading the Falkirk attack.

And the Englishman made it three goals in two games when he took advantage of some slack defending to race clear before clipping the ball past Jamie Ewings with 15 minutes gone.

Seventeen minutes later Jonathan Flynn did well to intercept a Dumbarton pass before finding space down the right. He sent a perfect weighted pass to Weatherston, who was rushing in on the opposite flank. The Falkirk wingman had time to steady himself before coolly sweeping the ball home.

In the second half Falkirk looked subdued as Dumbarton began to take control of the game. Set-piece specialist Scott Agnew looked like he had pulled a goal back for the home side with an expertly struck free kick, only to watch in disbelief as Michael McGovern somehow stretched to tip the ball over the bar.

The Sons continued to press Falkirk as the clock counted down, but Jim Lister wasted their best chance of the match when he blazed a powerful half-volley just over the bar from six yards out.

In the end Falkirk did enough to hold on for victory, a relief for the sizable travelling support who had watched their side draw their previous four league games.

The Bairns are back in action on Saturday, when they host league leaders Partick Thislte at Westfield.
