Bairns draw a blank at Queen of the South

Falkirk failed to replicate their five goal thrashing of Queen of the South in a fighting scoreless draw at Palmerston.

The Bairns hit both posts in the second half, and had two vital stops from Michael McGovern to thank for keeping them in the game.

But there was to be no repeat of the six-goal thriller the last time the Bairns visited the Doonhamers and left 5-1 victors.

Craig Sibbald lit up that match, but limped out of this one with an ankle injury ten minutes before half-time.

Queen of the South dictated the match, and Falkirk’s defence, marshalled well by Darren Dods was on a fire-fighting mission for much of the match. But only twice were they breached and twice McGovern came to the rescue.

His opposite number Robinson clawed a shot by Jay Fulton off the line when the midfielder was unmarked in the central of the goal and steered it high at the net, but the former Rangers keeper produced a one-handed save to defy the midifielder.

Fulton also hit the post in the second half with four minutes to go, and two minutes earlier Mark Millar had scuffed a shot onto the outside of the upright.

But it was two important stops from McGovern – who is out of contract in a matter of weeks – that ensured a share of the spoils for the Bairns.

On the hour Danny Carmichael nipped round Dods and stroked a shot into the corner which was palmed onto the post by McGovern.

The goalkeeper continues to improve weekly and made a point-blank stop to thwart Scott McLaughlin who only needed to touch the ball to steer it into the net. He made the connection to Carmichael’s cross but an instinctive block by the keeper kept the scores clear.
