GRANGEMOUTH Stags RFC will be looking for a quick return to National League Two after taking the drop this season.
The Glensburgh club have had a miserable season, blighted by injury and unavailability, and were duly relegated – for the second successive season – to National Three.

Their fate was confirmed up north on April 26 when Inverness-based Highland won
53-7. That meant, with two fixtures remaining, the 14-point gap to third bottom was mathematically insurmountable.

An under-strength Grangemouth took a 7-5 lead against Highland though, through a converted try from Rob Holdsworth.

But, unfortunately, despite playing with real commitment, that was the last score the visitors were to record for the remainder of the game and too many mistakes contributed to their downfall.

Highland hit back with three converted tries and a penalty for a 29-7 score at half-time.

Four touch downs after the break then put the nail in the Stags' coffin, and the disappointment was compounded even further when they lost Callum Taylor to a fractured leg and Andy Matheson with a broken nose.

Four days later the re-arranged game away to Forresters was played, with the third-top side recording a 38-10 victory.

However, the campaign is not yet over and the Stags will be looking for some sort of consolation when they play their final fixture this Saturday.

It is a very winnable one too, away to third-bottom Caithness in Thurso – a team they beat 38-6 back in October.

After that though, the Glensburgh side will be looking to re-build in the run up to the new campaign, which starts in September.
