SWANSWATER. With Swanswater being quite exposed to the strong winds the small ponds once again came into their own and provided shelter and sport for several anglers. As has been the case for a few weeks big numbers of average size fish were landed and this is reflected in the catch returns. Dancers, damsels, cat's whiskers and cormorant were the favourite patterns with a few fish also being taken on snatchers and black spider, especially from the small ponds. Colin Binnie (Denny) took five for 12lb 12oz.
BURNHOUSE LOCHAN. A floating line has been doing the job fished with a blood worm or buzzers. Both the yellow dancer and black/green fritz are still working well. Biggest fish: Grant Henry (Falkirk) caught a splendid rainbow trout that weighed in at 9lb 5oz. Some best catches: Graham Taylor (Denny) two for 6lb 8oz; Mark Weston (Falkirk) two for 6lb 5oz; Allan Duff (Falkirk) two for 6lb 8oz; Brian Fagan (Falkirk) three for 9lb 4oz; John Laing (Kincardine) three for 9lb.
WELLSFIELD TROUT FISHERY. All three lochans are fishing well for both fly and bait anglers with rainbows and blue trout featuring amongst the catches. The average trout weight was 3lb 2oz. M. Laird (Falkirk) landed a nice 12lb rainbow in his four for 19lb from the bait pond using worms. One yellow prize tagged trout was caught from the middle fly pond by M. Patterson (Camelon) using bait winning him £50. Best flies: orange fritz, yellow dancer, mini cats, bloodworm, diawl bachs and buzzers. Best bait: powerbait, mepps, worms and maggots. Some better catches: Watson (Laurieston) five for 17lb; White (Falkirk) five for 17lb; Lothian (Larbert) five for 15lb 4oz; Ferguson (Denny) five for 15lb; Hamilton (Falkirk) five for 16lb 8oz; Marshall (Denny) four for 10lb; Leonardo (Denny) four for 9lb 8oz; Harley (Falkirk) three for 8lb 8oz; Bennett (Airdrie) three for 8lb 8oz.
BOWDEN SPRINGS: Both lochs fishing well. Catch and release anglers reporting catches of 8-10 per session with blood worm doing particularly well, fished below sight bob on floating lines. Buzzers also doing well on milder days. M. Alison (Falkirk) landed a superbly conditioned rainbow of 8lb 14oz using a white cat; Ross Walker (Falkirk) one for 7lb 11oz on a humungus and M. Lynch (Maddiston) had a lovely rainbow of 7lb on a yellow dancer. M. Wilson (Falkirk) four for 8lb 10oz using maggot and power bait. White pink and black solid colour power bait working well as is pink power bait eggs.
CLARK ERIKSSON FURY 84
GLASGOW 51
Scottish National League
Cadet Men Gold
THIS 33-point win for the Falkirk side retained their unbeaten record in the league this season and their position firmly at the top of the cadet league. Glasgow had given Fury a tough match in their earlier meeting this season at the Mariner – the Clark Eriksson team winning by only 10 on that occasion. However, a 29-16 scoreline at the end of the first quarter gave Fury a comfortable lead. It was the home team that had the edge in the second though, as they reduced the lead to 10 at the half. The first two spells saw Ali Fraser and Cameron Buchan scoring well inside with Jonny Bunyan hitting 17 points – including three three-pointers. Brian Munnoch got back to his best form after injury and Euan Cameron was doing a good job at both ends of the floor.
The third period went 25-10 to Fury as they upped their offence and closed Glasgow down. In the fourth the Falkirk side increased their defence further, holding the home team to a mere seven points, for a 84-51 win. With four of the cadets then travelling immediately to Arbroath for a key junior game, the Falkirk side ran their bench for most of that period. Daniel Chok and Rory Moir produced good spells when they came off the bench. Top scorer was Jonny Bunyan on 25 – including five threes – Brian Munnoch got 18, Ali Fraser 17 and Cammy Buchan nine.
CLARK ERIKSSON FURY 86
ARBROATH MUSKETEERS 50
Scottish National League
Junior Men Gold
FURY went into this match joint top of the league with Edinburgh Kings knowing nothing short of a convincing win would maintain their momentum for the Junior League title. In a tight opening quarter Fury edged the home side by a point, 16-15. With all five starters on the scoresheet, they were playing solid team basketball which was working through to the defensive end as well. In the second Fury stretched the lead to eight at the half, again by playing tough defence and restricting Arbroath to 16. The 23 points Fury collected in the second were again spread across the team.
However, it was the third that saw Fury really take off. The Musketeers had been playing zone defence in the first half and that contained Fury to a certain extent, but a new look to Fury's offence in the third paid immediate results as the Clark Eriksson team tore out to an 18 point lead within two minutes of the re-start. Mark Hargreaves, Jonny Bunyan, Ali Fraser and Chris Chok were scoring at will and, in the closing part of the third, the introduction of Craig Roy and Lewis McDonald saw Fury's lead continue to increase – Roy, in particular, creating havoc on the break. Fury's pressing half-court trap in the third had also thrown the Musketeers into complete disarray. With Arbroath held to seven in the final quarter, Fury ran their whole bench as they cruised to victory. All the team played well with Corey McCabe, as ever, producing a great team performance. Cadet Ali Fraser top-scored on 22 with Mark Hargreaves having one of his best games of the season on 20. Jonny Bunyan was on 13 with Chris Chok on 12.
CLARK ERIKSSON FURY 28
LADY GLADIATORS 40
Scottish Cup quarter-finals
Cadette Women
FURY were four minutes from making it six club teams from six in the Scottish Cup semi-finals. A valiant effort from the Fury girls saw them lead the first three quarters, and only with four minutes left concede it. This was a much-hyped match by the opposition, who had made a big issue of being involved in a high-scoring league match against Polonia – a team that sits above Fury and Gladiators in the league. However, basketball is played at both ends of the court and Fury can take great pride in their defence – holding the St Maurice-based team in Cumbernauld to just one point in the first quarter! Offensively, Fury were not much better with seven but a lead is a lead and, given nine of the 11 team members can play next season this must rank as one of the best defensive performances of the current campaign by any Fury team. Cara Lake did a great job while the other four Fury starters – Kirsty Young, Claire Straiton, Hannah Murray and Jenna Beattie – were also outstanding in their roles.
The match continued in a similar vein in the second and third periods, with Fury leading 15-8 at the half. Lady Gladiators' offensive machine was still not in double figures and it 25-22 at the end of the third for Fury. The fourth was also a tight period as Fury were still in the match with minutes to go but a couple of long range threes by the Gladiators took them clear. This was a great effort by Fury though, holding the St Maurice team to 40 points and being in contention for the entire match. The cadette girls have one consolation in that they finished above the Gladiators in the league in an amazing fourth spot – qualifying for the gold section. That has been the target for the team and in doing so relegated, among others, rivals Edinburgh Kool Kats and, of course, the St Maurice-based team to the silver section.
CLARK ERIKSSON FURY 64
ST MIRREN 73
Scottish National League
Junior Women
THIS was a big improvement for the Fury team as they came within single figures of a St Mirren team they had lost to by over 20 points on their last meeting. A check of the scoresheet for Fury saw that – as well as the usual solid performances from Mairi Buchan, Katie Bissett, Amy Martin and Nicole Barr – Emma Johnston showed her potential as a scorer with 10 points while cadette Jenna Beattie, who came straight from a Scottish Cup tie with her age group, played some great defence and put nine points on the board. Cadette coach Kim Bunyan also went straight into the junior match from the cadette game and was happy that only three points separated the teams at the half. The opening period saw Saints lead by six but, in a great second quarter – that Fury won by three – it was Johnston and Beattie that put the points on the board. They shared nine of the 16 with Fury's leading scorer, Buchan, only getting two points in that quarter – a sign of great team play.
Saints pushed the lead out to nine by the end of the third with Buchan stepping up her scoring with 13 points to keep Fury in touching distance. The fourth was tied as the teams shared the points, leaving Saints a win at the Mariner that was probably tougher than they had expected. Buchan top-scored for Fury with 28 despite the attention of at least two players throughout.

With 20 players chasing the £2100 prize pot on offer, first-night nerves clearly played a big part for many of the competitors. Sean Carson from Grangemouth provided the most polished of performances as he comprehensively beat an out-of-sorts Danny Gibney – his 4-0 triumph repeated by both John McKeown and John Laird as the First Division fixtures commenced. John Paul Wilson also registered an opening night win while Graham Rae and Ian McVickers shared the spoils in an evenly fought contest. David Gracie provided the biggest shock in the Second Division when ousting Brian Taylor 3-1 while Alan Walker, Barrie Todd and Christopher Wilson also registered wins.

Falkirk & District Snooker League. The League Cup sections reached the half-way stage at The Creamery in Bainsford. In complete contrast to his tremendous league form, Bob McCabe continued to struggle as he surprisingly slumped 4-0 to Colin Jackson, victory seeing Jackson head his section at the midway point. Unlike McCabe, Carronshore's Tom Smith seems to be revelling in the League Cup event as his second successive victory, James Smith falling 3-1, sees him occupy the summit of his group. Elsewhere, Scott Hughes maintained his faultless march to the verge of qualification with victory over Ian Carr while Julie Gillespie, Billy Ferguson and John Halcrow all increased their chances with fine triumphs. League fixtures return for the next three weeks before the League Cup sections all reach their conclusions in March.
Results (Tuesday, February 5): League Cup – Roy Easton 2-2 Dougie Melrose; Bob McCabe 0-4 Colin Jackson; Julie Gillespie 3-1 Crawford Mitchell; Greg Murphy 2-2 Dawson McNeish; Scott Hughes 3-1 Ian Carr; Billy Ferguson 3-1 Duncan Foster; John Halcrow 3-1 Ian McEwan; Tom Smith 3-1 James Smith.

(8.30 p.m. start) Roy Easton v Julie Gillespie; Ian McEwan v Billy Ferguson; Dougie Melrose v Tom Smith; Ian Carr v Colin Jackson.
The sixth Scottish Masters national ranking event was held in Glasgow on Saturday, February 2, and saw some fine performances from the local competitors. Scott Hughes recorded two breaks over 70, and a superb 91 clearance during his qualification matches, but even this was not quite enough to seal advancement as Uddingston's Stevie Baillie pipped him in a very tight group. No such worries for Bob McCabe though, as he won all four matches in a section that included Denny's Crawford Mitchell, a 3-2 win over Mick Maguire confirming McCabe's final spot. The tournament decider saw a fine contest fluctuate one way and then the other, McCabe doggedly finding his best form to overturn Baillie's two-frame advantage and duly win the event by 3-2. It confirmed a second national triumph of the season for the Camelon player and moved him up to fourth in the rankings.
