Probably the best pre-season around

IF CARLSBERG did pre-season training then it would probably be the best in the world – and held at Falkirk FC.
The Bairns' first team squad has been using that edited version of the well-known advertising slogan to describe their preparation programme during the past two weeks.

Lager, however, definitely doesn't come into the equation. Instead, it's a healthy supply of protein shakes and a daily dose of scientifically proven drills to get the players in peak condition for the campaign ahead.

Everything has been planned weeks in advance, right down to the finest details, and the much-lauded, world class facilities at the University of Stirling are being fully utilised.

"I really couldn't ask for anymore," manager John Hughes told Heraldsport. "We've been here for three years now and it ranks amongst the top training facilities you could find anywhere – it is THE place to be, a completely different standard.

"Having everything at our disposal helps no-end when it comes to getting the players fit and ready for the season.

"I know they really enjoy it and I'd like to think they appreciate what they have. They've been using the Carlsberg line, so that can't be bad."

And, to make things even better, the club has now moved into a superb, brand new building on the campus.

Situated behind the university's sports centre and swimming pool, and adjacent to four grass and two synthetic pitches, it will be fully branded with the Falkirk FC badge in due course.

But it already has the stamp of approval. Everything is at the players' and management team's disposal and the structure quite literally cements the club's excellent relationship with the university.

The two-storey facility includes all the mod cons. Outside the first team changing room, which contains personalised lockers, there's a docking station for heart monitors.

Showers, baths and plunge pools can also be found on the lower level, a fully equipped physiotherapist area, equipment cupboards and a kit storage room for Steven 'Cheb' Sproule.

Up the stairs there's a changing area, and spacious office with tactics board, wall-mounted television and additional meeting room for Hughes and his assistant Brian Rice. Managing director George Craig and the
Academy staff are situated next door.

And then there's a players' lounge where breakfast is eaten daily and the squad can relax in between sessions.

That contains sofas, a 48" TV and DVD player, and leads to a balcony with further tables and chairs.

"This makes the players even more proud to be associated with the club," said Hughes.

"It is an excellent building containing all we could want for and somewhere we can call our own.

"Along with the pitches, which the ground staff are working very hard on, one of the most important things is to have a quality training facility such as this.

"And, without doubt, it is helping us in our preparation for the season
ahead, because everything is on our doorstep.

"It is also another added incentive for potential new signings. If they come to Stirling and see what we have then they'd immediately know they would be coming to somewhere very special.

"In fact, if I spoke to any player who has been here over the years then they would definitely say we have it 100 per cent right."

Meanwhile, there's been no let up on the field this week with the Falkirk squad being put through their paces prior to a closed-doors bounce match with Hartlepool United today (Thursday) as well as a meeting with Ross County, at Westfield, on Tuesday.

And a recent presentation by Raleigh Gowrie, the university's sports performance manager, showed that the club are doing all the right things.

"There is always room for improvement but that talk proved to the players they are getting the best advice, we are leading the way in terms of sports training and constantly progressing," said Hughes.

"Pre-season is planned weeks in advance and they know exactly what is required of them.

"At this stage everything is scientifically designed for a specific purpose – we are currently working on aerobic and anaerobic endurance.

"We have also moved into more game-related stuff and patterns of play and look forward to playing our friendly games."

There have been a couple of set-backs though, which include Carl Finnigan, Russell Latapy, Burton O'Brien and Mark Stewart.

"It's disappointing as it puts them back a little bit and, at this stage, it is hard to catch up," added Hughes. "But hopefully they are only minor problems and will be training again very soon."

Tam Scobbie is also expected to take part this week after a successful operation on his injured pelvis.
