PRAISE has been heaped on academy graduates Scott Arfield and Chris Mitchell after their excellent showings for the Scotland Under-21s last weekend.
The duo played a starring role in the 4-0 European Championship qualifier win over Azerbaijan, with Arfield also getting on the score sheet through a first half header.
In contrast to the recent fortunes of the senior side, the result puts Billy S
tark's squad on top of their group and in good shape for reaching the finals.
And head of football development Ross Wilson was delighted to see the pair impress in different areas of the pitch.
"We were thrilled again with the performance of Scott and Chris while it was also a great experience for Jamie Barclay to be involved in the squad again," he told Heraldsport.
"Scott managed to get a good goal from midfield and Chris put in an excellent display again at left back.
"Chris is a natural right back, but in recent weeks his showings at left back have been even better. He played very well there against Celtic and will be hoping to retain his place in the first team game this Saturday – it just shows how versatile a player Chris is and how well he can play in a number of positions.
"Scott, meanwhile, has always been proud of playing for his country since he was first involved in the under-19 set-up.
"Now he is vice-captain of the side and that is something I know he is very proud of as well.
"He always strives to do as well as he possibly can on the pitch and everyone at the club is delighted with his progress."
Last Friday the U19s could just not find the net despite dominating the game against St Johnstone. Scott Davidson went close on a few occasions and Blair Young had a goal disallowed for handball in what proved to be a frustrating day at the office for the young Bairns.
Despite not picking up three points, though, Ross was still pleased by another good performance from the youngsters.
"We were delighted with their showing," he said. "It was a match we should have won by about three or four goals but just couldn't get that first one. It was just one of those days.
"However, the boys were still excellent. There was some great play in midfield and up front, while the defenders were fantastic whenever they were called upon.
"I know the coaching staff were very pleased with the players' effort and, while the players might be disappointed at not closing the gap at the top of the league, the most important thing at this stage in their development is the way they are performing."
This Saturday James McBride's young guns will tackle current league leaders Celtic at Stirling University.
"Celtic are top of the league and playing well and, as always, they will be well organised and will have some excellent players – but our boys are looking forward to the fixture," added Ross.
The coaches should have a full squad to choose from with only Calum McLean on the treatment table. Kick-off is at 11 a.m.
