With Brian McLean injured, Jackie McNamara made his long-awaited return to the side. Boss Eddie May also paired recent signing Enoch Showunmi with Carl Finni
gan up front, with Pedro Mountinho again left on the bench.
However, the Bairns were forced to shuffle their pack early on when Pele picked up a knock and was replaced Stewart Murdoch.
Motherwell had the better of the early exchanges and put the Falkirk defence under pressure with Robert Olejnik called into action several times.
It took until midway through the half for the home side to get a foothold in the game, Jack Compton and Colin Healy both trying their luck.
Scott Arfield then fired a shot past the post before Showunmi passed up another chance.
In first half injury time, Motherwell were reduced to 10 men when Giles Coke saw red for a crude challenge on Arfield.
Despite their numerical disadvantge, Motherwell started the second period brightly and Olejnik had to be on his toes to keep out a curling shot from Ross Forbes.
Falkirk responded with efforts from Arfield and Showunmi, whose headed effort was too high to trouble John Ruddy in the visitors' goal.
Moutinho replaced Finnigan and Mark Stewart came on for Healy shortly after as the Bairns went in search of the elusive goal.
But, despite getting plenty of balls into the box, it seemed to always be a Well head or foot that got their first.
The final opportunity came in the dying seconds when Compton's free-kick from the left was gratefully seized upon by Ruddy.
