THE race for a top-six finish in the SPL is reaching fever pitch ... and it really hots up this weekend.
But, with just three fixtures remaining before the split, Falkirk's destiny is still firmly in their own hands.
The Bairns, sitting in sixth place, are in pole position – three points ahead of their nearest rivals in what has effectively become a th
ree-way battle for a final place in the upper half of the league table.
Their late 1-0 away victory over Inverness Caley last Saturday virtually finished the Highland club's aspirations, so Aberdeen and Hearts are now the only real contenders.
And that means that Falkirk's trip to Tynecastle in two days time has become a proverbial 'six-pointer' as they look to make history and go one better than last season.
The supporters are certainly up for it. Their ticket allocation for the clash completely sold out on Monday morning.
And manager John Hughes is calling on his players to be lifted by the big match atmosphere which is fully expected at the Gorgie Road ground as a result.
One player who knows all about that is Kenny Milne. The Falkirk defender spent five years at Hearts after joining them as a youngster.
"I enjoyed playing at Tynecastle and it does inspire you to lift your game in stadiums like that, in front of full houses of 16 to 17,000 people," he told Heraldsport.
"The stands are right on top of the pitch and it's usually a good atmosphere – at least when the home team are winning.
"However, if we can get on top of them then that will soon change.
"It's never easy going there though, and we've been on the end of a few hidings, but I certainly hope that's not the case on Saturday.
"We've sorted out our defence and had four clean sheets in the last five games which is great, and that is the basis to go and win the match.
Hard
"While we expect a really hard game, that's what we need to do – although Hearts have to as well."
According to the record books, claiming three points will be an almighty task.
It's been 12 years since Falkirk last beat the capital side in the league on their own turf.
However, this season, it's one win apiece and Milne says he and his team-mates will be right up for the challenge ahead.
"We are all ambitious and want to do the best we can in order to finish in sixth place and take the club another step forward," he said. "It's up to us to grab that and it's all about results right now.
"This is a massive game against the team closest to us but if we win then, with Kilmarnock and Aberdeen remaining, we won't be far away from finishing one better than last season.
"There will certainly be no fear among us on Saturday – we're right up for the challenge.
"There were four cup finals to play before we beat Inverness, now we have three remaining."
