What's been happening then ...
July 20, 1910
AT Falkirk Sheriff Court today, Patrick Boyle, a boatman, of Freeland Place, Kirkintilloch, and John Findlay, also a boatman of Canal Street, Kirkintilloch, both of whom employed on the lighter Fanny, of Glasgow, appeared before Sherif
f-Substitute Moffatt and emitted a declaration on a charge of having broken into the cabin of the steam lighter Arab, at Grangemouth, and stolen from there certain articles of cabin furniture.
The accused, who were represented at the declaration by Mr. R. S. Aitchison, of T. and T. Gibson and Aitchison, W.S., Falkirk,, were committed to prison pending further investigation.

EARLY on Saturday morning, while a boatman was conveying a lighter through the Forth and Clyde Canal, he observed the dead body of a man floating on the water near Lock No.6, Grahamston.
The body was taken from the water, and conveyed to the water to the mortuary at the Falkirk Police Station, there to await identification.
It is stated that the man would be about 45 years of age, and belonged to the labouring class. It was evident that the deceased must have been in the water for several weeks.
On inquiry today we are informed that the body has not yet been identified, although the police have communicated with all the lodging house-keepers in the district.

A SERIES of protest meetings were held at Falkirk on Sunday last to protest against the present Declaration Bill.
At 3.30 in the afternoon, a large and representative gathering met at Newmarket Street to hear Messers Dewar and Douglas, Edinburgh.
Rev J. Muirhead, Camelon, presided, and after the 100th Psalm and prayer had been offered, the Chairman referred to the U.F. Church objections to the new oath set forward by Mr Asquith.

FALKIRK'S royal connection was to the fore at a special graduation ceremony.
When the Princess Royal's Peter Phillips was awarded his B.Sc degree in sports science from Exeter University, eagle-eyed Bairns spotted that the proud mother was wearing the broach presented to her to mark her becoming a Freeman of Falkirk District.
On June 1, 1991, the Princess was given the Freedom of the area to mark her long support of Strathcarron Hospice, as well as her interest in working with handicapped children.

RESIDENTS have called on Falkirk Council to sort a traffic-choked street.
Locals in Rae Street, Stenhousemuir, are desperate for action to ease pressure around the primary school.
The street becomes a gridlocked at the school's busiest times and it is feared there could be a tragic accident.

A POST OFFICE is staying in the centre of a village after a row erupted over plans to flit.
Post Office bosses had been consulting on a plan to shift Laurieston Post Office from Mary Street to Grahamsdyke Street, where a potential buyer was based.
There was concern it would have been yet another service removed from the centre of the village.
The office's future at the current premises has been secured for now.

THREE out of four fires in Central Scotland are started deliberately.
The shock figures were revealed at the launch of a national campaign to highlight the dangers of wilful fireraising.
During the summer months, the number of calls to malicious fires increases and the new public awareness initiative, supported by all Scotland's eight fire services, aims to reduce these numbers.

FALKIRK householders will soon have new user-friendly recycling facilities in their area, making it easier to help keep the planet green.
Newly refurbished services at Roughmute and Kinneil landfill sites will finally open at the end of the summer, providing an improved range of recycling facilities for glass, newspaper, cardboard, clothing, books, garden waste, untreated wood, soils and rubble.
Through a partnership with Grangemouth Enterprise, Falkirk Council will also be making provisions for items such as washing machines, which will be reused or stripped down and recycled for homeless people. With the help of charities, householders will be able to recycle items that they wouldn't normally have been able to, including video tapes, spectacles and shoes.

THE Royal Mail has been urged to save a village post office.
Whitecross residents were shocked to be given just two days' notice of their post office's closure on Monday.
Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie said: "I've been in touch with the Royal Mail and confronted them about the totally inadequate notice given. They are looking to run a local post office but have not found a suitable applicant."
Mrs Peattie said that, with buses from the village to the nearest alternative post office in Maddiston only running every two hours, a local facility was essential.

POLICE bike, battery operated, £35.
