Rotary Club

President Alan Oliver was in the chair for the weekly meeting of Polmont Rotary Club. After dinner and some business, the speaker for the evening, Chris Morrison was introduced to the club by his father, Rotarian Iain Morrison. Chris spoke to the club about his work as a Web Technical Consultant for the International Internet Design Company Squiz. Chris outlined his training and previous experience prior to joining Squiz and went on to address the topic for the evening – Personalisation on the Internet. Using a Power Point Presentation, Chris explained how websites use cookies to enhance and track each users experience while visiting a website, and thereafter the products and services examined will appear on other websites visited. This earns money per click for the various companies visited. Chris then took an example of a large internet site that he been responsible for and gave the club, a behind the scenes look, at how the users profile and details are gathered and developed as they browse through the site, filling in the various forms or checking out products. As the visit develops the information is tailored to the users growing profile. The site also retains the information for future reference should the user revisit the site. Chris gave various examples of differing types of sites and showed how they developed the user experience. Chris explained that how by law the user has the choice to allow or disallow cookies. After his presentation Chris answered a good number of questions and the Vote of Thanks was given by Rotarian George Kerr.
