My tales of DIY disasters could fill a book ... and taking pride of place would be the chapter relating to central heating mishaps.
I would never dream of going anywhere near the boiler itself, but I’ve always thought that changing a radiator should be within my range of skills.
Scalded hands, a flooded flat and countless expletives are testament to the fact that it’s not as easy as it looks.
So, when the recent renovation of room required one not only to be replaced but also moved, it was time to call in the experts.
As luck would have it, two of my cousins are married to gas fitters so the required work was done in exchange for a spot of lunch.
I did as much of the preparation as I could. The new radiator was fixed to the wall, floorboards were lifted to gain access to the pipes and I even had the foresight to replace skirting board behind it.
The job was completed in just over an hour and I picked up a few handy tips along the way should I decide to renew my acquaintance with valves and copper piping in the near future.
I’d better wrap up first though ... after the last time we
heating for three days!
