“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)
These are the words of Jesus found in John’s Gospel in answer to one of his disciples asking, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there?”
Jesus doesn’t just point our lives in a direction and tell us to get on with it, he travels with us every step of our daily lives, and that’s why Jesus himself actually becomes the way.
In the multitude of voices in this world seeking our attention, Jesus’ promises can be trusted; he tells us it will not be easy following him but those who do so will know deep and lasting joy in their lives, and those who follow know that he is the truth.
Jesus also leads us to enjoy life in all its fullness here and now as we love God and love our neighbours – if only people the world over would give love a chance! And when it’s all over, Jesus leads us to new life in heaven.
For someone to say, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” is a bold assertion. Worth considering as you relax on your deckchair this summer?
