“...but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it happened to us by coincidence.” (1 Sam 6:9)
The context of this text is the returning of the captured Ark of the Covenant, by the Philistines, to the nation of Israel (without the help of Indiana Jones!).
During the Ark’s capture, the Philistines had suffered greatly, and they wondered if it was God’s judgment or coincidence.
So they devised a plan to reveal who or what was behind their experience.
The answer was God.
Some people believe their lives are ruled by luck or chance and out come, superstitiously, the “lucky pens” rabbits feet, four leafed clovers etc.
I have read of sportspeople going through rituals, football managers wearing their lucky ties etc.
It’s ridiculous when we analyse it.
I believe God providentially watches over the lives of His people.
David confessed “The Lord is my Shepherd”.
According to Jesus, God is so interested in our lives, that He knows how many hairs are on our heads.
So, as long as I am not living in disobedience and rebellion, I believe that God will ultimately work “all things together for good”, (Romans 8:28).
I heard someone say “coincidence is the unbeliever’s word for providence”.
Maybe God is trying to get our attention by the circumstances of life, and they are more “set ups” than “set backs”.
