‘Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil’ (Matthew 4,1)
Choices, choices! Not the supermarket kind – the life kind, life choices.
Even accepting a default mode by following the ant in front is a choice.
So, what’s my life? Stuff, stuff and more stuff.
That will do for today, tomorrow and maybe the day after but it’s hardly a satisfying life choice.
Still, it’s maybe the modern equivalent of bread alone, given that the our bread is fairly secure for us.
But not on stuff alone can we live. Security then – that’s a laugh in this world!
Especially since there seems to be a conspiracy to keep us afraid.
Power then? If we can control people and events, then surely, we’ll be safe and nothing can hurt us.
Besides, power is so pleasant. They may not love me but if they’re scared of me they can’t do much about it.
Not thinking about our lives can be pleasant too.
Jesus makes his choice. He starts his mission, leaving the consequences in the hands of his Father.
We can make ours guided ‘by every word that comes from the mouth of God’.
