“When they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him” (Matthew ch.2 v11)

Not so long ago I spotted a nugget of wisdom on a bumper sticker at the back of a car. It said simply “Wise men sought Jesus – they still do!”

We don’t know a lot about these wise men in the original Christmas story. Many assume there were three because of the three presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh – but there may have been more. Neither does the Bible tell us their names nor where they came from.

Many ask why they are even called ‘wise’, after all they had to stop and ask for directions and were late for the birth of Jesus!

Quite simply, they were wise because they searched for Jesus. They weren’t in possession of all the facts, but they were wise enough to check things out for themselves, and they were determined to find the truth. Their search was time consuming and expensive. It was probably dangerous too, but they persevered until they found Jesus and worshipped him.

How is your search for Jesus progressing? “Wise men sought Jesus – they still do!”
