Moving towards the Christmas break, most companies are in full swing, with activities week by week and competitions within the battalion and further afield.

At Grahamston United Church hall on November 20, George Barrowman, skipper at 1st Denny & Dunipace (Westpark Church) had adjudicator Ian Morrison preside over the old BB favourite, the vaulting competition. In a close contest 1st Polmont (Brightons Church) won with 3rd Falkirk (People’s Church) second and 1st Haggs (Haggs Church) third.

With another five teams taking part and the standard improving each year, Ian Morrison felt the skills he had seen augured well for the future.

Also in November the Company Section Junior five-a-side football league was concluded, with the cup to look forward to in the new year. 1st Polmont finished ahead of 1st Larbert (West Church), 1st Grangemouth (Abbotsgrange Church), 2nd Larbert (Larbert Old Church) and 3rd Falkirk

The 3rd Falkirk lads have also been following their football interests in attending Scotland ‘s international games against Ireland and England at Parkhead recently.

One of their boys, Alex Kidd, has also been furthering his progress in his Queen’s Badge work by successfully completing the BB Sports Leadership course at the Carronvale HQ. Congratulations.

Volleyball, once a very popular sport within the battalion, not least with 8th Falkirk (Bainsford Church) who, under the coaching of the now Battalion Chaplain the Rev Andrew Sarle, once notched up national competition successes; but now interest seems to have waned. The convenor, Willie Ballantine, reports only two teams entered the CS junior competitio. Winners 1st Grangemouth; runners up 1st Polmont. The same two companies provided four teams for the senior event with the two 1st Grangemouth teams seeing off 1st Polmont and their own third team into third and fourth places..
