We know we’re not the only ones who have become obsessed with Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games’.
If you’ve only seen the films then you’re in luck because you’ve still got the entire trilogy to read! But what about the rest of us who have read them back to front – what is there that can live up to this amazing series?
As ‘bleak’ is the new black, the shelves are packed with plenty of new dystopian novels for you to enjoy. ‘The Hunger Games’ is a tough act to follow but we think these books aren’t worth missing either.
Let’s start with Veronica Roth’s ‘Divergent’. In Tris’ world, her society is split into factions to create the “perfect society” by following certain virtues.
On her 16th birthday, Tris must choose a faction she must live by for the rest of her life, so long as she can survive the initiation process. But things quickly start getting complicated as she struggles with her choices, her friends and the mysterious instructor that she finds herself drawn to, the factions around her start growing restless and she finds herself trapped in the middle. A great start to what will be an amazing trilogy.
In ‘Gone’ by Michael Grant, there are no adults, only teenagers and children are left. Everyone has disappeared and no one knows why. There are no phones, no TV, no internet, and no way to get help. Split between rich and the poor, the powerful against the powerless, a battle is on the way. A great series with lots of sequels to keep us going.
Imagine being trapped in a maze filled with monsters with a group of people with no memories and only first names. With no idea what waits outside the maze for them, Thomas and his new group of friends must try to escape and face the people who have trapped them inside it. ‘The Maze Runner’ by James Dashner is fast-paced and will remained glued to your hand until you’ve finished. But don’t worry, the third book ‘The Death Cure’ is out soon!
You might also want to try ‘Matched’ by Ally Condie, ‘Inside Out’ by Maria V. Snyder, ‘Ship Breaker’ by Paolo Bacigalupi and ‘Blood Red Road’ by Moira Young. We even have a limited stock of Mockingjay pins so get one while you can. There’s plenty to choose from so go ahead and dive into another, albeit darker, world.
