In light of International Women’s Day this week, I thought it would be fitting to write an article about all the empowering ladies who have dominated my life over the past few years.
Feminism was something I was scared of when I was younger. When I thought of the word “feminist”, the picture that would immediately pop into my head would be of an angry lady who simply had it in for men.
Now it’s a totally different story and women across the world, including me, are embracing feminism and celebrating how absolutely fabulous ladies are.
One predominant figure who has played a big role in me embracing feminism is Emma Watson. The work she does on a daily basis to empower girls of all ages is truly astonishing.
Not only this, but her HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to recognise and campaign for women’s rights, combined with her UN talks, have inspired a growing population of young feminists.
Watching girls my age taking pride in themselves and actively doing more to ensure they can be as successful as they can really empowers me.
Another lady who has helped me embrace my love for empowerment, closer to home, is my mum.
Teaching me to respect myself and to not allow anyone – male or female – to walk all over me has proved to be an invaluable lesson. My mum is a strong lady and has taught me to be the same and for that I am very grateful.
But men too are embracing feminism. Barrack Obama, Daniel Radcliffe and Patrick Stewart have famously admitted to being feminists.
I hope they’ve inspired more men to celebrate women’s achievements.
By supporting one another, we can create equal opportunities between all sexes, which is the end goal.
So go on – support your local girl gang.
