Let’s hear it for the only boy in Stirling class

St Modans High commercial class in 1950

St Modans High commercial class in 1950

Margaret Gorman contact the Falkirk Herald after her school picture was printed along with an appeal to find out why there was one boy pictured.

Mrs Gorman, nee Stuart, now lives in Middlesbrough was sent a copy of the Falkirk Herald from her family who spotted her in the photo of St Modan’s High.

She said: “I am pictured in the middle row, wearing a shirt and tie. I think this picture was taken in 1950/51 and it was the commercial class so we focused on shorthand and typing. I seem to remember there were two boys in the class - which all the girls were very surprised at - but one of them dropped out quite quickly.

“At that time there was only one RC high school in the area and so after being a primary pupil at St Francis, I travelled from Laurieston to Stirling every day. I remember Anne Sludden, who shared her memory last week, very well. We were good friends and would cycle to St Francis together when we were younger as she lived up the road in Westquarter. “

Mrs Gorman (74) added: “I agree with Anne that it is a shame a reunion has never been planned. It would be good to know what everyone is doing and where they ended up.”

Additional names Mrs Gorman remembers are: Sheila O’Neil, Betty Keith, Rosemary McBride, Betty Kiernan and the teacher was Miss Welsh. The sole boy is James Lenathan.
