Moonwalk powers to raise cash to fight breast cancer

It's pink, it's bright and slightly frivolous but behind the MoonWalk Scotland is a very important and serious message.

Thanks to thousands of women – and a few brave men – all wearing decorated bras as they walk through the streets of Edinburgh in the middle of the night, a huge amount of money has been raised to help provide vital resources to help those suffering from breast cancer.

It has also funded research into the condition which kills a woman in the UK every 45 minutes.

Charity Walk the Walk which organises the MoonWalk donated the £3 million needed to build and set up Maggie’s Forth Valley.

This allowed fundraisers to concentrate on bringing in the cash to allow the centre to operate for years to come.

Thanking everyone for their support, Laura Lee, Maggie’s chief executive, said: “None of this would have been possible without funding and I would like to issue my personal thanks to Nina Barough, Walk the Walk and walkers of The MoonWalk Scotland, as well as the local Forth Valley community, for helping to make this happen.”

Walk the Walk was also the principal funder of Maggie’s Glasgow at Gartnavel Hospital.

Started by Nina Barough in 1996, walkers have so far covered over eight million miles at events around the world and raised in excess of £100 million for vital breast cancer causes.

This year’s MoonWalk Scotland takes place on June 10 and in the grounds of Holyrood Park. Entries are open at www.walkthewalk.org.
