A Girlguiding Scotland member from Stenhousemuir was one of 10 youngsters who travelled to Mexico this summer on a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Sophie Dickson (16), a member of the senior section unit, joined girls from across Scotland on the adventure.

The fortnight-long expedition offered Girlguiding Scotland members the chance to learn more about Mexican culture, visit world-famous landmarks and volunteer at a community action project.

The group’s hard work, volunteering at a summer school and running an action-packed programme of games, crafts and other activities for children, even earned them a thank you lunch with the local mayor.

Sophie said: “Travelling to Mexico was a fantastic adventure.

‘‘It was amazing to visit ancient pyramids and tour Mexico City, learn about Mexican culture and lead a programme for local children.

“I really enjoyed getting to know the local children, finding out more about each other’s culture and even picking up a little Spanish.

“Having the chance to travel to somewhere totally new was a big confidence boost. It’s shown me what I’m capable of and I can’t wait until my next adventure!”

Emma Guthrie, leader of the group, said: “Giving girls a safe space to try new experiences, develop new skills and grow in confidence is what Girlguiding Scotland is all about so I was really excited to take a group to Mexico.

“It was great to see the group grow in confidence throughout the trip, especially during their social action project when they did a fantastic job planning and leading activities for local children to enjoy.”

Sue Walker, Girlguiding Scotland’s Chief Commissioner, said: “The opportunity to take part in global adventures and volunteering is one of many ways we support girls and young women across
Scotland to gain vital new skills and discover their potential .

“For many of our young members the chance to travel somewhere totally new is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, giving them confidence to take the lead and fostering a life-long sense of adventure.”
