The Communites Along the Carron Association (CAtCA) was co-founded in 2010 by Christine Bell and the late Michelle Miller Allen.
The duo, from Denny and Dunipace, were introduced by Councillor John McNally after they had both approached him separately with concerns about the amount of litter that blighted local footpaths, particularly by the River Carron.
What started out as a small environmental group has now evolved into an organisation with an impressive record of achievement; the biggest being the successful campaign to have the Carron Dams being officially recognised as a Local Nature Reserve.
The site, which lies behind Larbert High School, once provided water to the world famous Carron Iron Works. Since the foundry closed in 1982, the Dams was drained of water and the resulting marshy land proved to be a haven for wildlife.
CAtCA, working alongside Falkirk Council, and supported by The Falkirk Herald, led the campaign to have the site protected from development.
Making a Difference is the theme of this year’s Local Newspaper Week, running from May 12-18
