Safety concerns have been raised at a public meeting by councillors and residents opposed to a proposed link road through a community.
The meeting was called by Maddiston Community Council to confirm public feeling towards plans to build a road from the end of Glendevon Drive near Maddiston Primary School, which is populated with housing, to the A801.
Objections have already been put forward to Falkirk Council against the planning application by Manor Forest Ltd/Land Options West Ltd as residents feel the street would become a “bypass” for the village meaning a huge volume of traffic flowing through a housing estate making it dangerous for children.
There are plans for more housing in the area, with some applications already passed, and developers say the link road is to connect the new housing to another major road instead of having just one road in and out.
Community councillor Jacquelene McDevitt said: “Reservations and objections have been raised by the community and no support has been expressed for it whatsoever from residents.
“The public meeting was packed, standing room only and all but one abstention voted against the proposal. There are serious safety concerns here, the road would become a bypass through a housing estate.
“The action plan produced from a survey of residents’ views two years ago also shows the level of opposition to further traffic in the village.”
Councillor Rosie Murray supports the community’s stance. She said: “On account of the school traffic congestion and safety concerns I am not in favour of this proposal. The planning committee has requested continuation for the applicant to provide various reports including a road survey which hadn’t been done.”
Councillor Gordon Hughes also said: “I believe that residents are right to oppose this link road and I fully support the community. I was struck by the passion expressed through the arguments presented and the total opposition to the proposed link road voiced by the community at the meeting.
“This proposed link road is a disaster in the making because of the consequences it would have for the community. I oppose this development.”
