Sun shines on Grangemouth Children’s Day

Thousands of families flocked to Grangemouth at the weekend to mark Children’s Day and bask in the sunshine.

Visitors to Zetland Park were treated to music, a procession, a crowning ceremony and carnival rides and games.

For the first time in several years, the weather was favourable for the crowds and Violet Cook, secretary of Grangemouth Children’s Day Committee, said it made for a fantastic atmosphere.

She added: “The last three or four years haven’t been dry but Saturday was a beautiful day. It meant there were even more people than usual out to enjoy the day.

“Zetland Park was extremely busy and the streets were lined with people for the parade too. It’s lovely that so many came to see it, a lot of effort is put in by the children, parents and the committee to make the day a success.

“The retinue were very excited but did brilliantly, they all looked lovely.”

Nicole Loney from Sacred Heart Primary School was crowned queen by Wilma Walker, herself a Children’s Day queen from 50 years ago.

The full retinue for Grangemouth Children’s Day 2014 was: Nicole Loney (Queen); Emma Beck and Niamh Haggart (Maids of Honour); Jessica Crangle, Neave Garrity, Lucy Gray, Mya Hay, Niamh Irvine, Abbie Jeffrey, Hope Rafferty and Leah Strathearn (Ladies in Waiting); Liam Shanks (Herald); Levi McDonald (Courtier); Kerry Clark (Flower Girl); David Hunter and Jacob Trapp (Page Boys).
