Stenhousemuir Lido puts on a show

Following vandalism at Crownest Park, a community day is planned at the Lido

A community is rallying around after vandals caused major damage at a popular park.

Trees at the Lido in Stenhousemuir were destroyed by vandals. It is estimated it will cost £1000 to repair the damage.

Falkirk Council planted the young trees last year and local residents are outraged at the waste.

It’s hoped the community day on Saturday, August 16, will boost morale following the attack and ongoing concern about anti-social behaviour at the park.

Visitors will be able to learn about the Crownest Park Lido and its wildlife with ecologist Nick Benge, enjoy a bouncy castle, bungee run and face painting and watch a bike stunt display team.

The event runs from noon to 4 p.m.

Councillor Charles MacDonald said: “The community day is a great idea and gives Falkirk Council the chance to show off all the work that went in to creating the Lido.

“With so much development in the town, we don’t have a lot of green space left so need to look after what we have.”

The park was in a neglected state following development in the area. The pond was filled with algae, wildlife almost nonexistent and the green space unkept.

But with the work of council staff and ecologists, swans, moorhens and frogs have taken up residence and native flora and fauna is thriving.

The pool has been redeveloped to help the eco-system and make it safer for swans and their cygnets.

Large boards with information about the wildlife will be installed before the community day, allowing people to identify the various plants, animals and fish.

Jacquie McArthur, economic development officer with the local authority, said: “The council has invested a lot of money into the Lido and it’s a fantastic eco-system.

“We hope the community day encourages local pride and encourages more people to use the facilities,”
