MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The shining light of The Kelpies

The Helix is a community planning project which has transformed an area between Falkirk and Grangemouth.

At their centre is the iconic Kelpies, two horse head statues designed by Glasgow artist Andy Scott.

Over 10,000 people attended last month’s official unveiling of the UK’s tallest pieces of public art.

Plans for The Helix were first revealed almost a decade ago and in 2005 the innovative project was given the boost needed when it beat off stiff competition from around the country to receive a £25 million Big Lottery grant.

Partners Falkirk Council and Scottish Canals are confident up to 350,000 additional visitors will come to the area annually to see The Helix and Kelpies, bringing £1.5 million in tourism revenue.

Making a Difference is the theme of this year’s Local Newspaper Week, running from May 12-18
