An ‘inspirational’ grandmother is the latest nominee in the Falkirk Herald’s Smile Awards.
Rena Wright (72) was put forward by her daughter Alison Kidd who says her mum always has a smile on her face.
As well as looking after her grandchildren since her retirement, Rena has become a volunteer with the Royal Voluntary Service – formerly WRVS – at Falkirk Community Hospital.
She lives in Falkirk with husband James, and has four grandchildren – Scott, Stacey, Lewis and Jodie.
Alison said: “I think it’s wonderful to have someone who is happy every day.
“She has gone back out into the community – she didn’t like being retired, she’s such a sociable, happy person.
“She’s an inspiration, to her close friends too.
“She is compassionate and kind, and she cheers everyone up.”
Rena, who also has a son, Stewart, was surprised when she found out about the nomination.
She said: “I was so shocked! I like a lot of company, and to get out and meet new people. I don’t like staying in. And I suppose I don’t really ever have a grumpy face!
“I looked after my youngest grandchildren when they were small but once they grew up, I decided I needed something to fill my time.
“I love being at the hospital, I work with lovely people and get to meet all kinds of people too.
“We’re always looking for new volunteers too – that’s why we’ve dropped the W from the WRVS!”
Scotland’s Happiness Day takes place on Saturday, November 2, and to mark the occasion Johnston Press Scotland, which publishes the Falkirk Herald, has joined forces with Stress the Positive to launch the 2013 Smile Awards.
Stress the Positive was founded by Kim Macleod. Its aim is to teach positive psychology techniques to people who are having to handle difficult times and to increase their real life happiness.
Kim has organised a conference to mark Scotland’s Happiness Day.
Kim said: “I want to encourage people to get involved. We will be celebrating with our Smile Award winners on November 2, and encouraging everyone to go out and spread their smiles and happiness.”
