An abandonded house that has blighted a Bonnybridge street for more than a decade is finally up for sale after Falkirk Council stepped in.

The bungalow at 8 Bonnyfield Road was once a smart family home but has lain empty since 2003, becoming a magnet for vandals, squatters and thieves in the process.

But now the three bedroom detached property is up for sale after Falkirk Council completed a lengthy legal process to take ownership of the site.

Jim Paul (78), who lives next door to the abandoned home, said: “It’s a step forward after what has been a long time coming. The condition of the house became an absolute disgrace; we had to regularly call the police to deal with vandals and people dumping stuff in the garden.”

Mr Paul, a retired butcher, has lived in Bonnyfield Road with his wife Alice for 48 years.

“We knew the couple that previously owned the house, they were lovely, but once they died it passed to their daughter and she obviously had no interest in it,” he added.

“I’m glad that it’s finally on the market, but it’s very annoying that it’s taken this long to get to this stage.”

After years of complaints from residents and local councillors, Falkirk Council backed a plan to compulsory purchase the property in June 2012 - but then had to request special permission from the Scottish Government to do so.

Approval was finally granted by Holyrood in September 2013, and the local authority could finally take control of the house.

It then had to undertake significant clearance work - including removing seven skiploads of rubbish - to make it ready to be sold.

An offer has now been made for the house.

Bonnybridge councillor Billy Buchanan said: “Mr Paul first raised this issue with me seven years ago. I’m delighted for all the residents in Bonnyfield Road that this saga finally seems to be coming to an end.”
