Tributes are paid to Falkirk accident victim
John Morton
Family and friends are still coming to terms with John Morton’s tragic death on Sunday.
Mr Morton, a retired Diageo whisky rep, was crossing Grahams Road on his way to Grahams Newsagents for the Sunday papers when he was fatally injured by a car.
The 78-year-old served his country in the Korean War during 1950-53 and was an active and loyal member of the Korean War Veterans Association.
Ian and Josephine Sisman had been friends with Mr Morton since they moved across the road from him into Alma Street in 1965 and spent every Christmas with him after his wife Rebecca died in 1984.
Ian said: “One of John’s favourite sayings was ‘to your health’ ,whenever we were at a function or something. It’s just a complete shock for him to die like that – we haven’t slept much since. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.
“He was always a very dapper dresser, always had a shirt and tie and cufflinks on and his trademark patent shoes for his dancing. He was quite a character.
“He loved tennis and dancing which he still did regularly. He loved his dogs too and used to own Pekingese dogs. He was very proud of his service in Korea and visited there a couple of times with other members of the veterans’ committee.”
Josephine said: “He was with us every Christmas so it will take us a while to get over the shock. Our daughters are upset too because they had known him since they were small. It’s really knocked us for six. I just can’t imagine that he’s not here now, we saw him practically every day.”
Shaun Patrick McManus, who has been charged in relation to Mr Morton’s death, made no plea or declaration during a brief appearance on petition at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Tuesday. He was released on bail.
