Steven’s out for a spin in supercar

Thanks to the power of Facebook, brave Steven Walker now knows almost as much about supercars as Jeremy Clarkson.

That’s because the 16-year-old from Polmont has been taken for a spin in some of the world’s greatest speed machines.

Steven was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, a cancer of the blood, in October last year.

He’s since underwent a gruelling programme of chemotherapy at Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, supported by mum Joyce and dad Gordon.

But the Graeme High School pupil could forget about his illness for a couple of hours on Tuesday as he tried out the driver’s seat of a brand new Lamborghini Gallardo – worth a cool £200,000.

He gave the sleek Italian-made car two thumbs up, saying it just shaded the Maserati GranTurismo Sport – worth £95,00 – which he had the chance to inspect on Friday.

Steven’s supercar odyssey began thanks to a Facebook page started by his dad.

Gordon Walker, a coach builder at Alexander Dennis in Camelon, set up ‘Steven’s Big Fight’ on the social networking site to allow friends and family to keep up to date with his son’s treatment.

It’s since been liked by more than 6000 people.

Grangemouth resident Dougie Reid saw the page and suggested to Gordon that Steven, a keen car fan, might enjoy being taken for a ride in his classic Ferrari Testarossa.

The pictures of that road trip were spotted by the wife of Tom Hunter, a motoring journalist at The Scotsman.

He spoke to colleague Mark Liddell, who arranged with the Lamborghini Edinburgh and Graypaul Maserati dealerships for Steven to be given a very special surprise last Friday.

Mark said: “Steven had no idea I was arriving with the Maserati - he was stunned when I pulled up outside his house.

“I took him for a drive up to The Falkirk Wheel - the car was certainly getting a lot of attention from other drivers, which Steven loved.”

Mum Joyce said: “He’s been through such a hard time with his treatment. These trips have given him a real boost.”

Steven is due to complete his programme of chemotherapy in June.

And he’s hoping to begin driving lessons as soon as he turns 17.

But the supercar fan might have to wait a while before he can buy his dream machine – a Ferrari 458.

A fundraising night for the Yorkhill Foundation will be held in Steven’s honour at Camelon Juniors social club on February 16.
