Adam Lake leaps into the limelight
Talented young dancer Adam Lake is taking a giant career leap forward.
The 21-year-old has just secured his first job – touring with the German production of ‘Cats’ for the next nine months.
And as the ‘swing’ - someone who understudies the majority of the roles - not only does he have to learn most of the parts, he also has to perform them in German.
This week, packing his bags at his Stenhousemuir home, Adam said he can still hardly believe he will be appearing in the acclaimed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
He also revealed that he almost never made it through the final audition after becoming ill and fainting.
He said: “It still seems almost like a dream. I can’t believe that I’m going and will be performing all these roles.
“Even though I’ve already been out to Vienna for a costume fitting, it is difficult to take it all in. I know I’m really very lucky to get such a great opportunity for my first job.”
Dancing was certainly in his blood. The youngster took his first steps in the studio at Stenhouse School of Dance in Falkirk where mum Lisa is one of the teachers and associates.
His talent was quickly recognised and when he was about to start Larbert High School, Adam had the opportunity to study at Scotland’s dance academy at Knightswood in Glasgow or go to the Royal Ballet School at White Lodge, London.
However, mum and dad Roy decided it was best if he spent the next four years at the local school, before going to Knightswood for his final two.
On leaving, he chose to spend three years studying at the acclaimed Mountview Academy in London, graduating this year with a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre.
Attending an audition at Pineapple Studios, London, for the German ‘Cats’ tour, he was astounded how many attended.
He said: “There were hundreds and some weren’t even seen. They had to be brutal but luckily I was invited back again. Then came the e-mail to go to Germany for the final audition.
“But I had tonsillitis and it was so hot in the studio that I fainted. However, I went back in and said I wasn’t coming all this way not to dance so they gave me another chance.
“Two days later I got a call to say they wanted me in the production.”
Lisa said the whole family, including sister Bryony (25) and brothers Robbie (23) and Evan (17), were very proud of him.
She said: “It’s very exciting and a wonderful opportunity.”
