An Irish republican group will march through Denny this Saturday in protest against what it calls “state collusion”.
The procession has been organised by the Central Scotland branch of Cairde Na hEireann, a Glasgow-based organisation that describes itself as the national structure for Irish republicans in Scotland.
Its stated aims include campaigning for a united Ireland and supporting “initiatives aimed at improving the material conditions of the Irish community in Scotland”.
Cairde had originally wanted to hold the event on June 2 but that application was withdrawn following discussions with local authorities.
The group first held a procession in Denny in April last year, which was described as a march against anti-Irish racism.
That event passed off without incident despite attracting around 100 objectors, one of whom was arrested for sectarian breach of the peace.
Police praised both participants and observers for their good behaviour.
The Falkirk Herald has asked repeatedly in recent months if Saturday’s event was planned as another anti-racism event, but all requests to Cairde for comment have been ignored.
But a message posted on Monday on the branch’s Facebook page of the central Scotland branch of Cairde Na hEireann appeared to explain the reasons behind the latest march.
It said: “This march is for truth and justice for the families who have lost loved ones through state collusion.
“This is not a sectarian, religious or Celtic march.
“This is a march for hundreds of innocent victims to get truth and justice so their grieving families can get the answers they deserve.
“Please attend respectfully and peacefully.”
The message has since been deleted.
Organisers expect around 400 people to take part in the procession.
They will assemble on Nethermains Road at 10.30 a.m. then march in formation towards Dunipace along Stirling Street before dispersing at Herbertshire Castle Park.
The procession was given approval earlier this month following meetings between organisers, Falkirk Council, Central Scotland Police and Denny & Dunipace Community Council.
