Two Falkirk families are celebrating after their pooches won prizes at Crufts.
Cheryl Gow and husband Mike from Reddingmuirhead were delighted their Canadian Eskimo dog Orlaigh was awarded first place in Open Bitch, Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex at the world’s most prestigious dog show.
Last week was their third time showing at event and their best results yet.
Cheryl also showed Orlaigh’s brother Dakota and sister Lily, who also won awards, and said she was over the moon at their achievements.
She added: “It’s a long weekend for the dogs going all the way to Birmingham for the show, but they were so well behaved and performed really well.”
Canadian Eskimo dogs are a rare and endangered breed which were used as working dogs by the Inuit people of Canada as a means of transportation and hunting. The Gows train their dogs four days a week in the winter months, taking part in races, and in the summer they show them at competitions around the country.
Cheryl, who shares her home with eight dogs including a husky puppy and samoyed, said: “This is a way of life for us but we love working with the dogs. Because they are so rare, we think it’s important to work and show the dogs to promote them.
“The day after Crufts, the dogs took part in Discover Dogs - an event at Birmingham’s NEC to showcase different breeds and all three were brilliant, despite meeting and greeting the crowds all day.”
Two Tibetan spaniels proved good genes run in the family by going walkies with the prizes in their categories.
Two-year-old Tam Ray’s Talk the Talk at Tibby Mills won the utility breed section, while his son, 10-month-old Tibby Mills Knave of Spades, was the best puppy dog.
They are owned by James and May Mills of Banknock and were shown by their grand-daughter Lynnsie Ferguson (21), who has three of the dogs herself.
James (67) said: “It’s the fourth year we’ve shown dogs at Crufts and we are over the moon at winning, especially for Lynnsie.”
