Princess continues royal link with visit to The Falkirk Wheel
HRH The Princess Royal waves as she prepares to travel aboard the new Seagull Trust vessel Wooden Spoon on The Falkirk Wheel
Crowds turned out to welcome HRH The Princes Royal to The Falkirk Wheel.
The sun shone as the royal visitor was the special guest at the start of the 10th anniversary celebrations which continue this weekend with a packed programme of events.
It continued The Wheel’s royal connections with HM The Queen performing the official opening in 2002.
Princess Anne also took part in a naming ceremony of the newest Seagull Trust vessel which is a floating classroom and was supplied thanks to a £50,000 donation from Wooden Spoon, rugby’s charity to help disabled and disadvantaged children.
She then travelled in the charity’s namesake, Wooden Spoon, the short distance from the Union Canal basin to The Falkirk Wheel, before descending to the Forth and Clyde Canal basin.
There she met representatives from Scottish Canals, Lowland Canal Volunteer Group and canal societies, as well as those responsible for designing, building and the running of The Wheel and the Millennium Link.
Before unveiling a commemorative artwork, she spoke to some of the children involved in its design, including youngsters from Easter Carmuirs Primary.
