The Olympic Torch is to travel through Falkirk as part of its 70-day tour of the UK.

The historic symbol of the Olympics will visit Larbert, Camelon, Falkirk and Skinflats on Wednesday, June 13, in the lead-up to the Games in London this summer.

Local residents have also been picked to carry the torch through local towns and villages.

The torch is due at Broomage Avenue in Larbert just after noon, and will travel on Stirling Road to Camelon, visiting The Falkirk Wheel at 12.45 p.m.

Just before 2 p.m., it will begin its tour of Falkirk, travelling from Glenfuir Road, through West Bridge Street, Cockburn Street, Hodge Street, Arnot Street, St Crispins Place, Callendar Road and Bellsmeadow Road.

From there it will head along the A904 and Grangemouth Road finishing on Falkirk Road near Falkirk Football Club.

The short Skinflats leg of the journey is due to start at 2.40 p.m. before the torch heads across the Firth of Forth to Cairneyhill.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life.

“The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets.

“Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Falkirk’s moment to shine.”

See this week’s Falkirk Herald for a feature on some of the locals carrying the Torch.
