Mariner Centre to close for three weeks
�100,000 will be spent making the Mariner Centre more energy efficient.
Council leisure bosses will spend £100,000 making a busy sports centre more energy efficient.
However, keep fit fans and swimmers will have to go elsewhere while the work is carried out next month.
Earlier this year, Falkirk Community Trust spent £30,000 on a new energy management system at the Mariner Centre in Camelon.
It has provided vital information where cash and energy can be saved, as well as identifying which maintenance repairs would be beneficial.
A trust spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, we require to close as a consequence of this essential maintenance work. However, we have kept this to a quieter time of the year and to a minimum time frame to avoid customer inconvenience.”
The centre’s pool will be closed from Sunday, December 9, with all other facilities shut from the following day until Thursday, December 27.
Installation of £25,000-worth of water heating equipment will produce around £3000 of savings annually.
However, with no hot water in the building during this work, it must remain closed on health and safety grounds.
Energy efficient lighting will also be provided in the cafe area, along with a new ceiling with the £5000 cost expected to save £1250 annually.
A further £25,000 will be spent installing energy saving swimming pool covers to retain the heat in the water overnight when it is not in use.
During the shutdown, regular maintenance will be carried out throughout the building, which opened 27 years ago, including re-grouting of the pool.
Councillor Adrian Mahoney, Falkirk Council’s convener of leisure and tourism, said: “The Council is pleased to support ongoing investment in the Mariner Centre. However, sometimes – as in this case – it means a small closure to allow upgrading work to take place. Hopefully people will understand this inconvenience is for the greater good.”
The trust spokeswoman added: “During the closure, our regular customers, including circuit club users, can be accommodated in our other centres at the Grangemouth Complex and Bo’ness Recreation Centre.”
Youngsters who look forward to the annual Christmas pool fun disco will not be disappointed as it will go ahead on Saturday, December 8 from 6.30-8.30 p.m. prior to the closure.
