A new tourism initiative is aimed at putting Falkirk firmly on the map.

The group charged with bringing more visitors to the area received a £100,000 boost this week.

VisitFalkirk unveiled its campaign to highlight all that is good about the district at historic Callendar House on Tuesday.

The partners – Falkirk Council, Falkirk Delivers, Falkirk Community Trust, The Helix, the Falkirk Wheel and Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway – are putting up £51,000, with the cash matched by a similar sum from VisitScotland’s growth fund.

Liz Buchanan, VisitScotland regional director, said: “These are exciting times for Falkirk and the surrounding area, particularly given the opening of The Helix later this year. This campaign will help give visitors even more compelling reasons to visit and stay here.”

Cash will be used to target ‘young domestic explorers’ living within a 90-minute drive of the area through booklets and posters, together with radio and online advertising.

Councillor Adrian Mahoney, Falkirk Council’s leisure, tourism and community convener, said: “We want to encourage more people to visit the Falkirk area – and for them to stay longer and spend more money in the local economy.”

Alastair Mitchell, Falkirk Delivers town centre manager, said: “Working as a partnership we will be delivering an innovative marketing programme that will really help put the Falkirk area on the tourism map.”
