Lawyer flies in for Bonnybridge black moss meeting

Homeowners have long blamed evaporating alcohol from nearby bonded warehouses for causing the black fungus that grows on their properties.

Residents in Bonnybridge whose homes have been affected by the so-called ‘black moss’ fungus have been invited to a public meeting on Tuesday.

William McMurry, president of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, will address the meeting and discuss the potential of pursuing a “class action”-type court case on behalf of residents who claim their homes have been discoloured by the fungus.

Homeowners in the area have for years blamed the growth on evaporating alcohol from nearby bonded warehouses, which are owned by the multinational drinks conglomerate Diageo.

The company maintains there is no direct link between its warehouses and the fungus, which it says is a “complex range of naturally occurring microflora.”

Mr McMurry said he had “rock solid” scientific evidence that the black moss was caused by evaporating ethanol.

The meeting will begin at 6.30 p.m. at Bonnybridge Primary School in Wellpark Terrace.
