A school which had a £3.6 million extension less than three years ago is to bring back portable classrooms.

Larbert Village Primary will welcome 75 primary one pupils in August - three full classes - forcing them to use ‘modular units’.

Falkirk Council education services is proposing moving two classes for children with learning difficulties from the main school and into the temporary accommodation.

Eric Appelbe, convenor of Larbert, Stenhousemuir and Torwood Community Council, called the move ‘‘disappointing’’.

He added: “Obviously it is not good news that, just a couple of years down the line, we are looking at portable classrooms and the kids losing more playground space.

‘‘It looks like very poor planning on the council’s part.”

The extension was completed in August 2009 to cope with the large number of new houses within the catchment area.

It added seven classrooms, an ICT suite and gymnasium to the school which was built in 1891.

More than 60 children have already been confirmed as joining P1 in 2013 and questions are being asked over where they will go.
