Councillors have rejected a bid to give a derelict building a new lease of life.

Larbert House, which has B listing status by Historic Scotland, had been earmarked for conversion into 20 flats by developers Strathyre Properties Limited.

They also hoped to turn the nearby stable block into eight ‘mews’ type houses and build three detached and 10 terraced homes on the site at a later date.

Falkirk Council experts had recommended detailed planning permission be granted because it met all the local development plan rules. Senior planning officer Ian Dryden said: “Larbert House has been empty for 10 years and the application to rescue the property is welcomed because it will be done in a sensitive manner.”

But the planning committee voted 5-4 to refuse the entire scheme when it met.

Local SNP Councillor Steven Carleschi claimed the development would put “unacceptable” pressure on classroom space at the nearby Larbert Village Primary School.”
